Read Phuttachad's EDN article 'Using FPGAs in Consumer Electronics'. Some hints on driving 7-segment LED displays, (as found on the Altera Cyclone II development for example), from an FPGA can be found here. Simple hardware transmit only I2C controller designed for intialising I2C devices in systems without a microcontroller. This article includes some example code for receiving and transmitting SDI data.
